Un jour de l'an de grâce 1755, il reçu pour invités Voltaire et madame de Châtelet qu'il savait des hôtes très gourmands. Pour l'occasion il demanda à sa cuisinière, madeleine, de préparer une sucrerie inédite. Celle-ci proposa à ses hôtes de petits gâteaux aux ventres rebondis qui furent déclarés fameux notamment pour la finesse due au parfum subtil de la bergamote. Le roi Stanislas apprécia tellement ces gâteaux qu'il en envoya un colis à sa fille, Marie épouse du roi Louis XV à la cour de Versailles. La pâtisserie fut tellement appréciée qu'on décida de l'appeler Gâteau de la reine, mais celle-ci préféra l'appeler, Madeleine, du nom de celle qui avait inventé ce gâteau aujourd'hui célèbre.
